What I Have Learned About Growing My Business

When I first got into this business some many years ago I didn’t have a clue about selling real estate or dealing with people. And back then you got a desk, a phone, a phone duty schedule, a pat on the back and a “good luck”!

So, I looked for sources to help me be successful in this business. Although there were several people who helped me succeed in this business, two of the most influential people to me were, Howard Brinton and Zig Ziglar.

The one quote that has always stuck in my mind from Howard was,

“Get out of Judgment, Get into Curiosity”.

That one piece of advice alone helped me to be open minded to so many things that have made me successful. Before I heard that from Howard I have to admit, I was a little judgmental and not so open minded.

The other was from Zig,

“If you’ll help enough people get what they want, you’ll always get what you want”.

Back then I had no idea about goals or how powerful they were. I heard this advice from Zig before I had any real goals in real estate or life for that matter. But when I started living that quote, amazing things started to happen. For one I started getting a lot of commission checks. So many at one point, I was putting checks in my desk drawer and sometimes forgetting about them.

What was happening was, by following Zig’s advice, I was helping people achieve their goals and their dreams, they were telling friends, relatives, co-workers, etc, about me, and my business was snowballing.

Eventually I started thinking about things I wanted, my dreams and goals. It was happening and I didn’t even realize it. I was helping enough people get what they wanted, in turn I was setting goals (thanks to Zig too) and getting what I wanted.

And it wasn’t just the material things that money can buy.

It was satisfaction, the joy, the “feel good to the bottom of my heart” of helping people achieve the American dream, of not just home ownership, but the “smiles from the heart” on people’s faces when I handed them keys to their new home! The excitement of helping someone buy their first home! The satisfaction of knowing a young couple would be starting a family in their new home! The knowing that I helped a family relocate, overcome their fears and anxiety of the unknown, and get settled in to a new life! The tearful happiness I feel when I know I’ve helped people downsize and find their “last home”!

What I’ve learned about growing my business over the years is, I have played a huge role in a lot of people’s lives!
